Daily Market Update 5/8/14

Mortgage rates were little changed Thursday in quiet trading.  This morning, weekly Jobless Claims fell to 319,000, below the consensus forecast of 325,000.  The European Central Bank made no change in rates, as expected.  Stocks moved modestly higher.  Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen is providing a second day of Congressional testimony on the state of the economy.  Yesterday, Yellen said the economy was on track for “solid growth” in the current quarter, but also noted the housing slowdown, saying “The recent flattening out in housing activity could prove more protracted than currently expected” and the development “will bear watching”.  No other key data will be released today.
